Infrared observations by the James Webb Space Telescope have brought the FS Tau star system into view, revealing details that thick dust had long kept hidden, NASA reported.

The FS Tau system is densely packed with dust. That dust had previously blocked astronomers from observing many of its features, according to NASA. The new infrared image makes numerous structures within the system visible for the first time.

NASA also reported that the image captures multiple background galaxies. Those galaxies, the agency said, appear in the image resembling fireworks.

The release was timed to coincide with the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations, NASA said.

The telescope's infrared capability allowed it to cut through the obscuring dust that had made FS Tau's inner details inaccessible to earlier instruments, according to NASA.
